After many years as a rental, the original house had become tired and unloved. But rather than demolish—a costly and complex option on this steep, bush-clad site with narrow access—our client opted for a complete transformation within the existing footprint.

We were engaged mid-project to finalise building consent documentation after excavation had already begun beneath the home to create additional habitable space. The builder, having started the work, called us in to help rethink the layout. Our redesign introduced two downstairs bedrooms, a bathroom, and a lounge, along with a wider timber deck that frames views of the harbour and native bush.

The original stairs were positioned centrally, taking up valuable floor area. We replaced them with a modest stairwell extension, which maximised usable space on both levels. Working closely with the structural engineer, we developed upper and lower decks to extend the living areas outdoors and enhance the home’s connection to its surroundings.

Upstairs, we finalised the design of two bedrooms, a study, family bathroom, and a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. The renovation also included new windows and doors, reroofing, and partial recladding—thoughtfully executed to maintain the home’s modest scale.

Now perched confidently above Wellington Harbour, the home embraces its setting. A sun-soaked, north-facing timber deck offers a private outdoor retreat, while expansive glazing brings in the views and surrounding bush, making nature an integral part of everyday living.
