PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This family home is situated right on beachfront at Raumati, with expansive views over the Tasman Sea, towards Kapiti Island and the South Island mountain range.  Originally 3 bedrooms, the house had been altered over the years, to look like a ship, with a crow’s nest and porthole window.   The view from the home was not maximised.

The owners wished to increase their footprint, including a large garage, workshop, media room, laundry, new entry with stairs to a Games Room and bar. Upstairs they wished to add an additional bedroom and a new ensuite for the Master.  The clients wished to reuse materials, in order to reduce waste.   The Client is an engineer, manufacturing steelwork, which enabled thinking outside of the box; just to be creative with ideas and he would make it happen.

DESIGN FEATURES AND CREATIVE SOLUTIONS:

The driveway to the site has an avenue of Pohutukawa canopy overhead.  The 6m tall Iron Bark Sentinels pay homage to the avenue, creating drama and intrigue.  Double height extension, tucks under the recession plane and the feature translucent garage door is flanked with chain downpipes.  The rich cedar cladding warms you as you make you way down the narrow timber boardwalk, opening to a lush, outdoor living space, offering respite on a hot summer’s day. Glimpses of the sea tantalise.  Within the front entry, you are met with a dramatic cantilevered staircase, oak treads, glass balustrade.  Turn to your right and open plan view for 14.7m, the view breathtaking.

The steelwork is concealed and culminates in the large corner stacker sliders, which peel back from the corner, embracing dramatic sea views and Kapiti Island. Creating a beautiful light display at different times of the day and seasons.

The existing stairs, lead you up to the new Mastersuite, bedrooms, and the crow’s nest on the 3rd.   The cedar cladding, is vertical shiplap to the upper floor, contrasted with random width weatherboard to the lower floor.  New luxurious Mastersuite is 48m2, with ensuite and wardrobe, built atop the original Living Room.  Spectacular views are framed with shutters for bath and shower.  Each bedroom on the North has access to the private deck.  The cedar wrapping the verandah, acts like a tented awning with no visible support, framing the views and adding drama, directing your view to the majestic Kapiti Island.
